As the season draws to a close you’ll have more time to rack up those must have learner driver hours. L2P can help with that.
Meet Joe.
Joe is a registered volunteer mentor driver with the TAC L2P Program. The TAC L2P Program is free for learner drivers who meet the eligibility criteria.
Joe has worked in the oil industry in middle management for over 43 years and is transitioning into retirement. Joe has been a mentor driver with L2P for seven years.
How did you first hear about L2P?
I saw an ad in the paper looking for volunteers. It was quite a process. They interviewed me and I submitted a whole bunch of criteria including a Working With Children Check and Police Check. Once approved I went through the four stages of being a learner driver. They then built a profile on me that can be passed to a young adult that is looking to be placed with me.
What made you decide to join L2P?
I wanted to be part of the solution on the roads and not a problem. Help kids get their driver's licence and be part of safe driving programs. The highest age group that has accidents is under 25’s, so it's important to me for them to gain that experience.
How does it work?
A coordinator will contact me. I sit down with the young person for a chat and we get to know each other. We each give our feedback independently and if we connect as mentor and student we begin the process of me taking them out to learn to drive.
How often do you drive with a participant?
It can depend on the availability of the student. It’s generally once a week with a minimum two hours.
Do participants have access to a car which is used to gain supervised driving experience?
Yes. L2P have cars for use, which I book in advance. There is generally eight to nine cars in the region to access.
Do you feel the target population is adequately reached by and involved in this activity?
I’ve been placed with a student as young as seventeen and also been put with a 24 year old. I'm not sure if they advertise or if people are aware this program is available.
Is there anything you’d like to add?
I’d encourage all young adults to contact the L2P program. It’s a great way to learn to drive an ensure you get your hours up.
